Schaut man sich den Purpose verschiedener Unternehmen an, fällt auf, dass sich der Purpose inhaltlich gerne daran orientiert, dass das Unternehmen ganz allgemein etwas für Gesellschaft, Umwelt und mitunter auch die Mitarbeitenden bewirken will. Auf den ersten Blick erscheint dies auch erstmal sehr lobenswert. Zugleich wird in einer direkten Gegenüberstellung deutlich, dass das zentrale Narrativ wenig präzise und dadurch letztlich austauschbar und beliebig wird. Natürlich gelingt es durch eine übergeordnete Formulierung des eigenen Purpose zunächst einmal, einen breiten inhaltlichen Konsens anzubieten – wer hat schon etwas dagegen, wenn sich ein Unternehmen für die Gesellschaft als Ganzes oder den einzelnen Menschen stark macht oder nach Klimaneutralität strebt?
Weil dies aber immer mehr Unternehmen tun und sich dabei auf einer abstrakten Ebene der UN-17 Ziele für nachhaltige Entwicklung bedienen, ist es umso wichtiger, der Beliebigkeit im eigenen Interesse Grenzen zu setzen: indem der Purpose differenzierter und greifbar gemacht wird.
- Was genau strebt denn das Unternehmen mit seinem Purpose an?
- Was genau tut es tagtäglich dafür?
- Welche gesellschaftlichen Positionen werden vor dem Hintergrund des Purpose zu relevanten Themen eingenommen?
Vor allem diese greifbare Verankerung im Unternehmen, bspw. mit Blick auf das Managementsystem und das Steuerungsmodell des Unternehmens, und im Verhalten der Mitarbeitenden und Führungskräfte bis in das Top-Management, unterstützt die Authentizität des Purpose, verwurzelt ihn tief in das Unternehmen und lässt ihn aufrichtig und wirklich relevant werden. Und besonders dann gelingt es, die im Purpose steckende Kraft auch zu erschließen. Purpose ist dann wie selbstverständlich Unternehmens-DNA und nicht mehr reines Marketing-Sprech.
Mit dieser Verankerung liegen zwei Dinge nahe:
Zum einen ist es vorteilhaft, die Erarbeitung eines Purpose in intensiver Arbeit nicht nur MIT, sondern vor allem IM Unternehmen und MIT den Mitarbeitenden vorzunehmen. Der Purpose ist dann ein auf den Punkt gebrachter Wert bereits ganz grundlegend bestehender Bestrebungen und Wirkrichtungen im Unternehmen. Der Prozess der Purpose-Erarbeitung schärft die zentralen inhaltlichen Punkte im Zusammenhang mit dem Purpose und liefert Ideen für Anwendbarkeit im Alltag. Damit wird die Grundlage für eine noch stärkere gemeinsame Ausrichtung aller Mitarbeitenden geschaffen.
Zum Zweiten ist die Implementierung bedeutsam. Erst die konsequente Verankerung und Umsetzung des Purpose schafft Authentizität und Glaubwürdigkeit. Es ist dabei eine Sache, diesem über weithin sichtbare Leuchttürme oder mit dem Purpose inhaltlich in Verbindung stehenden unternehmensweiten Programmen aktiv Ausdruck zu verleihen – weil wir den Purpose haben, setzen wir das Projekt um. Häufig betrifft dies aber nur einen kleineren Teil der Mitarbeitenden und der Purpose wird dann auch nur dort spürbar. Verankerung in der Breite ist so kaum möglich.
Eindeutige Zielsetzung sollte es daher vielmehr sein, den Purpose in den Alltag jedes Mitarbeitenden zu bringen: bei der Erledigung von alltäglichen Aufgaben, in der Führung und schon bei kleinen Entscheidungen. Und zwar nicht aus einem Zwang oder einer Bekehrung heraus, sondern im Sinne eines Angebotes, welches umgekehrt auch die alltägliche Arbeit in Bezug zum Purpose bringt und damit für die Mitarbeitenden Hintergrund, Orientierung und Verbindung gleichermaßen liefert.
Insofern sind es gerade die kleinen Veränderungen, die in Summe den wichtigsten Beitrag zum Purpose leisten und diesen wirksam werden lassen.
